MARC KöSCHINGER

Absorbing, exalted, worthy, seeking, narcissistic, sacral and merciless:

“There is so much in me, that wants to come out”, Marc Köschinger explains. In his works he limits himself to the colors black and white. “If I had to colorize my work, I think I probably would go insane.”

Marc Köschinger was born in Germany but he grew up in Paraguay, South America.

In his life it was difficult to find something he could call “home”. He was caught between two worlds, but could none of them call his homeplace. This, so different, cultures both were strangers to him.

Because of this he started to search for his own place. On this way he created a spiritual home just for himself.

But the problem or the disadvantage of such a inner place is that you can not share it with anybody. Nevertheless he wanted to share it.

Art turned out to be the instrument for him to connect his innermost with this real world outside.

His small sculptures are morbid and in their own way defenseless but nevertheless they hit the viewer without any remorse and with full ruthlessness.

They are sublime relicts, quptations of old masters like Bosch or Grunewald and at the same time entirely new interpretations of life and death. Conscious omissions are suddenly converted into a impression of hidden glory, adorable details, like butterflies, but with a back-breaking presentiment of death.

“Butterflies are, what a lot of people don’t know, scavengers”, Köschinger illuminates.

For him they are carrying souls, like the “Ba-Birds” of the ancient Egyption Mythology or like the putti of the christian belief.

The exploration of the different layers of interpreations often creates a kind of amusement but also a melancholic appreciation.

In addition this works, made of paper, papier mâché and metal, bring a cruel and suggestive maelstrom into being, which not every viewer can stand.

They are mirros, leading to the innermost I and evoke an awareness of the own momentariness, the most “narcisstical morification” of humanity.

But he not only works in the field of sculpturing. Köschinger is a trained photographer and grafic designer. Furthermore his paintings, all in all black and white, seamless integrate into his ouevre. But in all this ways of self-expression you can find this inner place. His heart. And this is it, what makes his works so unique and interesting.
